You may have noticed the winds have really picked up, and it's felt almost like spring already, though it's still early, and we've only just come out of winter.

It's a busy, unpredictable time of year in the garden, and this year there's an added layer to watch out for…El Niño. (yes, the 2019 doom-and-gloom fear-mongering tactic is back). Have we drummed up enough fear for you to bulk buy mulch yet?

All jokes aside - this is the year to take those extra precautions. There's a lot of concern around dryness, and with that likely lingering into summer, anyone on tank water or relying on groundwater should be paying close attention.

Mulch matters so much right now.

Honestly, we can't go on about mulch enough. It's the best. It's organic matter, and if there's one thing you can do to save your garden this year, it's mulch.

Here's why we love it:

it covers the soil so it holds moisture, it blankets out the weeds, and over time it breaks down into a rich humus layer that feeds your plants and gets the worms working, building healthy soil biology from the ground up. That slow build is where the magic happens, mulch just once a year and you're genuinely creating better soil over time. It prevents moisture loss and helps the ground retain water, which matters more than ever with the dry we've got coming.

The types we consistently use are Cambian Mulch, Forest Floor, and Post Peel.

As a general rule, a layer of around 100mm gives you the best moisture retention and weed suppression without smothering your plants, and that all adds up to saving you money on irrigation, which is perfect for our clients on tank water in Leigh and Omaha.
