Introducing the Rochford Brew

This year we've also been working on something new, the Rochford Brew, a special garden mix we've developed.

It's exclusively stocked at Matakana Landscape Supplies/ Drinnans, with their help, it's been made possible for our clients to get the best garden mix.

The drainage issue a lot of people worry about is really common around here. Most local soils are loam soils, which tend to be fairly heavy in clay content from the Waikato or Auckland. They all have their purposes, but even when you mix in sand to help it drain, the clay still ends up clogging any drainage system underneath.

So instead, we bring in free draining volcanic topsoil. It's naturally full of tiny air pockets, so it drains brilliantly on its own, way better than anything local. We blend that with compost, so you get the amazing drainage from the volcanic soil plus all the nutrients from the compost.

We call it the Rochford Brew, and it's exclusive to us. It's what we now use in all of our garden beds, so you get proper drainage and healthy soil right from the start ☺️

We're currently testing the brew in experimental gardens with vegetables, and we've got the crew working on improving it further. We're going to keep refining it. Our goal is to create the best garden mix around.

We've Also Brought Sheep Dags Into Our Planting

Another addition this spring, we've incorporated sheep dags into our planting, supplied by The Dag Man through Matakana Landscape Supplies, famous for their powdered sheep manure and wool mulch.

Sheep dags are a great fertiliser, and we're experimenting with both wool mulch and powdered sheep manure across our plantings. The wool mulch acts as a superb organic mulch that helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and improve soil health as it breaks down, that's the "oomph" that builds over time. The powdered sheep manure works alongside it as a nutrient-rich soil conditioner, providing a natural source of nitrogen, phosphorus, and other essential nutrients to boost the health and productivity of the garden.

Between the two, it's not an instant fix, it's a slow burn. The more you use it, the better your soil gets, and the better your garden performs. Wool mulch is also ideal for garden beds, pathways, or around trees, and it's eco-friendly, affordable, locally sourced, and 100% biodegradable, while the powdered manure is easy to apply and great for revitalising vegetable beds or enriching soil generally.

Between the mulch, the Rochford Brew, and the Dag Man products, our garden maintenance team has been out servicing properties across Matakana, Omaha, Leigh, and the Mangawhai coast, giving gardens everything they need for a proper spring reset.
